Evidence-Based Treatment

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for OCD, anxiety disorders, insomnia and depression. Using CBT, you will learn about the relationship between your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. You will learn how to respond differently to unhelpful thoughts and how to use behaviors to help you feel better. CBT focuses on the present and is an active treatment in which you will learn and develop skills to use to manage your symptoms.

Exposure & Response Prevention

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of CBT used to help individuals with anxiety disorders and OCD. During an exposure, you will face the triggers of your fears and distress and learn how to change your response to it. You will be exposed to your obsession and practice not using compulsions to alleviate your distress or fear.  You will also learn a lot about OCD and anxiety and how their cycles are reinforced over time and will take gradual steps to weaken those cycles.

Schedule Your Consultation

If you would like to start working with me, the first step is to schedule a 15-minute phone consultation during which I will ask you about what is bringing you into therapy, learn more about you and share information about how I practice and how I think I may be able to help you. If we determine my services are a fit for your needs, we will schedule a first appointment which is an intake and assessment session.

Assessment often takes between one and two sessions. During the assessment session, I will get to know you more, will ask you for more detailed information about your symptoms and explore your strengths, values and interests. I take a strengths-based approach to treatment and want to build on things that are already working well for you.

Once your assessment is complete, we will develop your goals for treatment and write a treatment plan which guides your treatment. The plan can be updated at any time and is considered a “living” document. It’s meant to keep our work focused but not limited. The easiest way to think about your goals is by asking yourself “what do I want to get out of therapy?”

I typically meet with clients on a weekly basis and expect that all new clients meet with me weekly for the first 4 to 6 six weeks of service. As you develop skills and start to have success managing your anxiety or OCD we will continue to meet weekly and then start to decrease frequency of visits to every other week while you master your tools and strategies.  The timeline of treatment is different for everyone and is highly specific to the individual. The above is meant to give you a broad overview of what a course of treatment may look like.
